ATS Stage 4 68RFE - New King of the Hill?
Posted on 15 March 2017
Built 68RFE's have come a long way - like the ATS Stage 4 68RFE for 2010-17 6.7L Cummins - part number 3099442356. How does it stack up? Let's have a look.
The Stage 4 is designed for the truck with aggressive fueling, large single or compound turbos, or those wanting the best available for their daily driver. The build is unique in that it uses a billet five clutch torque converter setup - where others use a triple disc. Billet parts are stacked inside from the input shaft to input clutch drum, low roller clutch and accumulator piston. High performance clutches are used to add torque capacity and a custom valve body brings it all together.
But is this all that's needed to hold 850+ hp? Not quite. The best parts in the world mean nothing without transmission tuning. At Street Diesel Power, we've seen this time and again talking with thousands of people. They rebuild the transmission or get another brand, it doesn't come with transmission tuning, put the throttle down and there goes the clutch packs. Transmission tuning is the most important part of upgrading your 68RFE.
What makes the ATS3099442356 Stage 4 unique is that it includes transmission control with the Co-Pilot. Other brands do not - instead the user is left to find their own (and hope it works) or have to use specific companies to tune it. ATS solved this problem (and in fact saves the customer money) by including it in their packages. The Co-Pilot is plug and play, controls line pressure, torque converter lock-up and makes the transmission perform as it was intended. No guesswork, no buying new EFI-Live tuning - just plug and play. For customers needing just basic transmission control, the Stage 4 3098472356 features a Co-Pilot that controls line pressure, but not the converter lockup. This drops the price nearly $700, but still keeps the 5 year warranty. $700 buys some extra performance parts!
Where the setup really shines is with the warranty. A quick internet search will show tons of built 68RFE options. But the devil is in the details - especially with a warranty. Some have a 1-3 year warranty, others none. Once a builder hears "compound turbos and 100% over injectors" the warranty is out the window. ATS backs the build with a 5 year / 500,000 mile setup - no matter who installs it. And the warranty isn't just good in one particular city or state, it covers any customer in the U.S.
